Vegetable Plot 2003 - A Work in Progress

Before: Fall 2002
These pictures were taken when we were in escrow to buy the property. It's right before the start of the rainy season, as you can tell by the brown pasture grass.

View from the backyard facing granny unit. That strip of blackberry bushes and other weeds on the right is the property line and my vegetable garden to be. Note the lawnmower shed far back on the right. The depression in the earth on the close right is a winter drainage creek. It's underground further uphill.
View from the granny rear deck. All those bushes are the mid-section of the vegetable garden to be. The trees to the right are the start of what will be an orchard. The RV and buildings in the background are the neighbor's
To the right of the previous picture. The only live fruit trees in the orchard are a peach and an apple. There's also a grape vine (on the peach tree), euculyptis, oak scrub, and of course blackberries.
Closeup of central part of veggie garden. The structure at front right is the lawnmower shed. The first vegetable plot is to the right of it. Note how overgrown it is. On the left is the garage and the water storage tank.

We finally started etching out a plot. We thought the shed was against the property line but, think again. Those healthy looking lillies in the back were a big surprise. There are roses there too. The tree is an oak.

Mikel spent 4 hours hacking out the blackberry vines just to make this small plot, about 6x9. We dug out the worst of the blackberry roots, covered the plot with cardboard and newspaper (no tilling), and added two trash cans full of compost we brought from the old house.
Another view of the new plot. See how far we have to go?
To the left of the lawnmower shed. Here's where we put all those blackberry vines. Eventually this will be garden space too. It gets good sun, but not as much as the other part. There are more roses on the back fence here. The fence (covered) is the property line.
